Probability Calculator
This probability calculator instantly computes the likelihood of any single event occurring and extends to combined probability for two independent events — showing results as a fraction, decimal, and percentage all at once. Whether you need to find the chance of rolling a specific number on a die, drawing a card from a deck, or the joint probability of two unrelated outcomes happening together, this tool handles the math in seconds. It is designed for students, educators, analysts, and anyone who needs quick, reliable probability calculations without pen-and-paper work.
Benefits
Using an online probability calculator offers clear advantages over manual computation:
- Instant results: Outputs appear as you type, eliminating arithmetic errors and saving time.
- Three formats at once: Every result is shown as a fraction, decimal, and percentage so you can use whichever format suits your context.
- Combined probability in one step: Automatically computes P(A and B) and P(A or B) for two independent events without extra formulas.
- No setup required: Runs entirely in the browser — no account, no download, no installation.
Use cases
The probability calculator is practical across many real-world scenarios:
- Classroom and homework: Verify answers to probability problems in statistics, mathematics, or data science courses.
- Games of chance: Calculate the odds of rolling a target number, drawing a suit from a deck, or landing heads on a coin flip.
- Business risk analysis: Estimate the joint probability of two independent risk factors both occurring in a project or investment.
- Quality control: Determine the combined likelihood of two independent defect conditions arising on a production line.
- Sports and forecasting: Combine independent win probabilities for two separate matches or events in a parlay estimate.
How to use
Getting a result takes only a few seconds:
- Step 1 — Single event: Enter the number of favorable outcomes and the total number of possible outcomes. For example, rolling a 4 on a standard die is 1 favorable outcome out of 6 total.
- Step 2 — Read the result: The calculator displays the probability as a fraction (1/6), decimal (0.1667), and percentage (16.67%).
- Step 3 — Second event (optional): Fill in the favorable and total outcomes for a second independent event to enable combined probability.
- Step 4 — Combined output: The tool shows P(A and B) — both events occur — and P(A or B) — at least one event occurs — calculated automatically.
Frequently asked questions
What makes two events independent? Two events are independent when the outcome of one has no effect on the probability of the other — for example, flipping a coin and rolling a die are independent because the coin result does not change the die's odds.
How is combined probability calculated? For two independent events, P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B). The probability that at least one occurs is P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) − P(A) × P(B). The calculator applies both formulas automatically.
Can probability ever be greater than 1? No. Probability is always a value between 0 and 1, inclusive (0% to 100%). A result outside this range means the inputs — such as favorable outcomes exceeding total outcomes — need to be corrected.
Does this tool handle conditional probability? This calculator is designed for independent events only. Conditional probability, where one event affects the likelihood of another, requires a different formula (P(A|B) = P(A and B) / P(B)) and is outside the scope of this tool.
