Text Size Calculator

This text size calculator measures the exact storage footprint of any string in bytes (UTF-8) and kilobytes the moment you start typing. Alongside the byte count, it delivers a full breakdown: characters with and without spaces, words, lines, and sentences — updated live with every keystroke. Whether you are validating API payload limits, planning database column sizes, or hitting a word-count target, you get every number in one place.

Benefits

Unlike a simple word counter, this tool gives you the technical and editorial metrics that matter most:

  • True UTF-8 byte size: See exactly how many bytes your text occupies in memory or on disk, accounting for multi-byte characters such as accented letters, CJK characters, and emoji.
  • Instant KB conversion: Both binary KB (÷1024) and decimal kB (÷1000) are shown so you can match the convention your system expects.
  • Six metrics at once: Bytes, KB, total characters, characters without spaces, words, lines, and sentences — no switching between tools.
  • Fully client-side processing: Your text never leaves the browser, making it safe to paste confidential content such as API keys, internal memos, or medical records.

Use cases

  • API and webhook payloads: REST APIs, SMS gateways, and push-notification services enforce strict byte limits. Paste your JSON body or message text to confirm it is within range before sending.
  • Database schema design: Find the realistic maximum byte length for a column before declaring it as VARCHAR(n) or TEXT in MySQL or PostgreSQL, avoiding truncation errors in production.
  • Content writing and SEO: Verify article word counts and sentence variety without opening a separate word processor or pasting into Google Docs.
  • Internationalization testing: Compare how the same content expands in byte size when translated from English into languages with larger Unicode footprints.
  • Log analysis and config files: Estimate the byte weight of an embedded string before including it in an environment variable, YAML config, or Base64-encoded field.

How to use

Getting your results takes three steps:

  • Step 1 — Paste or type your text: Drop any content into the input area. All metrics update in real time — no button to click.
  • Step 2 — Read the metrics panel: The panel instantly shows byte size, KB, character counts (with and without spaces), word count, line count, and sentence count.
  • Step 3 — Trim or expand as needed: Edit directly in the box and watch every number adjust live until your text meets its target size or count.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the byte count higher than the character count? UTF-8 encodes characters outside the basic ASCII range using 2–4 bytes each. Emoji, for example, require 4 bytes, so a 10-character string containing emoji can easily exceed 20 bytes.

Does the calculator handle Unicode and emoji correctly? Yes. The tool uses the browser's native UTF-8 encoding, so every character — Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic, CJK, emoji — is measured with the same accuracy as your target system.

What counts as a word or sentence? Words are sequences of non-whitespace characters separated by spaces or newlines. Sentences are counted by terminal punctuation marks (period, exclamation mark, question mark), providing a reasonable estimate for most prose.

Is there a text length limit? There is no hard cap imposed by the tool. Performance depends on your browser, but typical modern browsers handle millions of characters smoothly without slowdown.
