Word Counter – Free Online Word & Character Counter
VSM's word counter tells you the exact word count, character count, line count and estimated reading time of any text the moment you type or paste it in. Everything runs client-side in your browser, so nothing you write is ever uploaded to a server, keeping the process fast and private. Just paste your text into the box and watch every statistic update live as you edit.
How to use the word counter
Paste or type your text directly into the input box labeled “Enter or paste your text here...”. As soon as you start typing, the tool analyzes the text in real time and displays results in four main stat cards: Words, Characters, Lines and Reading Time. There is no button to click and no file to upload — every number updates instantly with each keystroke, whether you are adding or deleting text.
Below the main stats sits a “Detailed Stats” panel showing characters without spaces, the number of sentences (counted by punctuation marks . ! ?), the number of paragraphs (split by blank lines) and the average word length. The “Time Estimates” panel converts your word count into reading time at three speeds: slow reading at 200 words per minute, average reading at 250 words per minute, and speaking pace at 150 words per minute — handy for timing a video script or presentation. The “Top Keywords” panel lists the five most frequent words of four letters or more found in your text along with how many times each appears, so you can spot which terms dominate your writing at a glance.
When this tool is useful
The word counter is ideal for writers checking that a blog post meets an SEO word-count target, marketers trimming social captions to a character limit, students matching an assignment's required word count, and copywriters polishing product descriptions or email subject lines. Podcasters and video creators can use the reading-time and speaking-time estimates to gauge how long a script will take to read aloud, while editors can use sentence and paragraph counts to check readability at a glance.
Tips and things to know
For accurate paragraph counts, separate paragraphs with a blank line, since the tool detects paragraphs by empty lines rather than indentation. To keep sentence counts accurate, avoid stacking multiple punctuation marks such as “!!!”, since a run of punctuation is counted as a single sentence marker. The “Top Keywords” list only recognizes unaccented English-style words of four or more letters, so for text in other languages the “Detailed Stats” and “Time Estimates” panels are the more reliable numbers to rely on. You can keep editing the text directly in the box and every figure recalculates instantly — no button required.
Privacy and free to use
All counting happens with JavaScript directly in your browser — your text is never sent to or stored on VSM's servers, so it is safe to paste even sensitive drafts just to check their length. The tool is completely free, with no sign-up and no limit on how many times you can use it.
Frequently asked questions
Does the word counter work with non-English text? Yes, word, character, line, sentence and paragraph counts work accurately for any language; only the “Top Keywords” panel is limited to unaccented English-style words.
Is my text saved anywhere? No, all calculations run locally in your browser and VSM never receives or stores the text you type.
How is reading time calculated? The tool divides your total word count by an average reading speed (200 or 250 words per minute) or speaking speed (150 words per minute), then rounds up to the nearest minute.
Is there a limit on text length? There is no hard limit — you can paste very long text, though extremely large documents may process slightly slower depending on your browser.
