BMI classification table
| Category | Asian standard | WHO standard |
|---|---|---|
| Underweight | < 18.5 | < 18.5 |
| Normal | 18.5 – 22.9 | 18.5 – 24.9 |
| Overweight | 23 – 24.9 | 25 – 29.9 |
| Obese class I | 25 – 29.9 | 30 – 34.9 |
| Obese class II+ | ≥ 30 | ≥ 35 |
Asian people accumulate visceral fat at a lower BMI than Westerners, so the WHO Western Pacific Region (IDI & WPRO) set separate thresholds — this is the scale commonly used in Vietnam.
BMI Calculator Online
BMI (Body Mass Index) is calculated from your height and weight and gives a quick read on whether you are underweight, at a healthy weight, overweight or obese.
This calculator scores you against two scales: the international WHO thresholds and the Asian (IDI & WPRO) thresholds commonly used in Vietnam, because Asian populations face metabolic risk at a lower BMI.
How to calculate BMI
- Pick your gender and enter height in cm and weight in kg.
- Click "Calculate".
- Read your BMI plus its classification on both scales.
- Compare against your ideal weight range.
The formula
BMI = weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Someone 1.65 m tall weighing 58 kg has a BMI of 58 / (1.65 × 1.65) = 21.3, which is normal.
FAQ
What BMI is considered normal? 18.5 to 22.9 on the Asian scale, or 18.5 to 24.9 on the WHO scale.
Is BMI accurate for everyone? No. It cannot tell muscle from fat, so it is unreliable for athletes, children, pregnant women and the elderly.
